RLC POLL: THE “UNUSUAL” SUSPECTS LEAD THE PACK.

This isn’t the first time a Republican conference straw poll has favored the libertarian Texas Congressman Ron Paul, but who was a surprise runner-up was former Ambassador John Huntsman who didn’t attend the conference.

NEW ORLEANS - Ron Paul won the presidential straw poll at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans Saturday, easily beating out his rivals for the GOP nomination. Second place went to Jon Huntsman, the little-known former Utah governor who missed the conference with a cold.

  1. Paul 612
  2. Huntsman 382
  3. Bachmann 191
  4. Cain 104
  5. Romney 74
  6. Gingrich 69
  7. Palin 41
  8. Santorum 30
  9. Pawlenty 18
  10. Johnson 10
  11. Roemer 9
  12. McCotter 2

However, the rumor around the Politico water cooler is that Team Huntsman paid supporters to attend the conference to pad the straw poll ballet.

Rumors circulated here that Huntsman campaign had paid for supporters to attend the conference and a spokesman for the candidate, Tim Miller, didn’t deny that they had.

“Not commenting on internal strategy,” said Miller, adding: “The result demonstrates that young conservatives are responding to his record of success in Utah, willingness to take the debt problem seriously, and foreign policy message”.

So a GOP presidential candidate padded a poll? Wow! That’s a stellar way to jump to the head of the pack. Let’s pay people to be campaign supporters!! What a novel idea! Didn’t ACORN pretty much do the same thing back in 2008? Oh, yeah. They did.
